Legend Airlines

Summer / Fall 2000

Do you remember Legend Airlines? You may not because it was not around for very long. Less than a year I think. I was lucky enough to fly Legend three times – the three best flying experience I’ve ever had (most Southwest flights are so non-eventful that they always have to be considered good flying experiences)

The Legend terminal was on Lemmon Avenue at Love Field. The Lemmon Avenue side over there by the Cadillac dealer. You know how long it takes to normally get from the car to the gate on most flights. Here’s what it was like on Legend:

Pull off of Lemmon Avenue and into the parking garage. You might have to go up a level or two and roll your luggage back to street level, but then the worst is over. Average time to park and get to the front door, 2-3 minutes. If you can get someone to drop you off, you pull right up to the front door and I’m not exaggerating by saying that from your car to the ticket counter is maybe 50 ft. The terminal is brand new and the staff was all very friendly. Even the security check-in (pre-9/11) was different because it was not crowded and the agents were friendly.

When you get to your gate (which at the most was 5 minutes after you got out of the car), there is a nice waiting room with large seats. Again, it is not crowded because each flight has only 56 seats! They had coffee, juice, donuts and even some internet hookups for the clinically geeked.

On board, it was just as impressive. Two seats on each side of a luxurious DC-9. Large, wide leather seats that reclined and had (I’m not kidding) foot rests like your favorite recliner. The armrests were wide and built into the back of the seat ahead of you was a small tv screen. On the screen was a map of the US with a little airplane on it and it showed you where you were as the flight progressed. Of course you could change it to one of the satellite tv channels. Meals were served on full size plates.

Larry and I flew to Los Angeles twice around August and October 2000, and Sharlette and I went to Las Vegas on Legend in August. This was a great find that was too good to be true. Apparently it was too good to be true, as Legend went out of business in December of the same year.
