This was around 1972 and 1973. I was an advertising executive when I was 12 years old. My client was A-1 Carpet aka: A-2 Carpet, AAA Carpet, Carpet City and "I can't believe this is Carpet". My office was the bed of a Ford pickup that belonged to Dale, the foreman in charge of passing out fliers. I shared my plush quarters with about six other young execs who were working their way up the coporate ladder of success with me.

Here's the rundown: Dale picked everyone up around 8 am on saturday mornings and we jumped in the back of the truck. He would drive us over to some part of town we were unfamiliar with and tell us to hit it. We would jump out in pairs, with a handful of carpet fliers and begin the trip down the street, attaching a deal of the year carpet flier to each door on our side of the street. When we got to the end of the road, we jumped into the waiting carpet wagon and were dropped off at another untouched set of houses. Pretty routine stuff.

The highlight of the day? Lunchtime of course. Lunch usually consisted of a stroll thru a 7-11 and picking up a sandwich and a 28 ounce Coca Cola. It was somewhat uncool to get one any smaller than that.
My associates told me to walk slow and reminded me that we were getting paid by the hour.

This was about the most boring job I ever had. I can't remember one exciting event that ever happened. All I can remember is that I made $1.25 an hour. We did work after school as well as Saturday and one week I made 16 bucks. That was the most money I had ever had in my possession at that time. It almost wouldn't fit in my pocket.

The usual suspects, Bill, Buddy, and Tony would accompany me on these long journeys to the middle of nowhere.

You know, when you're a kid, you don't mind riding in the back of a pickup with trashcans and waterhoses. It's not bad at all. Overall, I would say it was a good experience for us. We actually worked, performed a service and made some money. It was a good deal, and I remember generally being happy as I walked my route because I had a partner doing the other side of the street and anytime you have someone to hang out and talk with, it's a pretty good deal.
